With numerous local bike shops in Castlegar and the Kootenay’s, combined with some of the most progressive mountain biking trails in BC, mountain biking in the area is increasingly popular in the area. People travel from across BC to mountain bike in the Slocan Valley.
Key local areas include:
- Castlegar - Classic and progressive rides. Check out the Grand Euphorium trail.
- Rossland - The new “Mountain Bike Capital of Canada” - Only 25 minutes from Castlegar.
- Slocan Valley - Some of the steepest, most technical and semi-secret rides of the Kootenays. Ask in the local bike shops in Castlegar, Rossland or New Denver.
COLUMBIA AND WESTERN RAILWAY TRAIL
Castlegar sits at the eastern end of the now defunct Columbia and Western Railway (C&W). The C&W was built to carry mineral ores from the southern part of the Kootenay Rockies to the coast. In its glory days, the C&W connected with the Kettle Valley Railway into the Okanagan Valley and the coast. Today, this abandoned railway route is a great cycling trail.
